Throughout September, we thought we’d take a little time to recognise the breweries that blazed the trail we follow today and the beers that inspired us to do what we do.
In the fast-paced, ever-changing world of modern beer, it’s easy for the work of early innovators to be overlooked and for the classic beers that created appetite for our work to get pushed aside. Without them, there quite simply would not be a scene today.
So we’re running a new campaign during September called Class In Session, intended as a month-long celebration of the classics and an exploration of the rich history that has brought us to this point.
As part of this, we’re creating a string of content for social media and hosting a series of events at our Manchester tap room, Unit 9.
Award-winning beer writer Matthew Curtis and renowned beer sommelier Natalya Watson are both joining us for events focused on the history and evolution of beer, which will be streamed online as well as being open to in-person attendance at Unit 9.
A series of smaller tastings will also be hosted throughout September, run by our tap room staff, tailored to different levels of expertise. These will include guided beer flights, giving beginners a quick introduction to different beer styles while enjoying four of our freshest releases, and more in-depth beer school sessions set among the stunning oak barrels in the brewery barrel store, which will dive deeper into the evolution of each style and our approach to them.
Brewer’s table events on September 15th and 29th will be hosted by one of the brewers and will allow guests to get really technical, while being guided through a selection of beers from across the spectrum of styles we produce.

Showcase events
Wednesday September 8th, 7pm: The Evolution Of Modern IPA with Matthew Curtis
Matthew Curtis, author of the recently-published Modern British Beer, will be at Unit 9 at 7pm on Wednesday September 8th for The Evolution Of Modern IPA, providing a closer look at one of the most-talked-about styles in modern beer. The event will explore IPA’s development, debunk some myths and look at classic examples, while including a guided tasting of four beers that represent different stages in its history.

Wednesday September 22nd, 7pm: The Wonders Of Fermentation with Natalya Watson
Then Natalya Watson, who is one of the country’s foremost beer experts, will host The Wonders Of Fermentation at 7pm on Wednesday September 22nd, giving you insight into the history of yeast in brewing and how it has helped to shape the beer scene we know and love today.
Guided beer flights at Unit 9
Join us at Unit 9 for a beginner’s guide to modern beer styles with a guided tasting through a flight of four of our beers fresh on the taps.
You simply book your flight in advance and then head to Unit 9 at any point during their opening hours on the day you’ve booked for, and a member of the team will be on hand to lead you through your selection.

A Journey Through the Taps at Unit 9
Join the Unit 9 Team amongst the barrells for a special tour through six of our go-to styles on tap.
You'll learn all about each style, from Pale through to Imperial Stout - a bit about the history of each and why we as a brewery love them. To finish we'll pull out a little something special from the cellar to finish.
A great opportunity to get to know us a bit more as a brewery and a team, whilst diving into some of our freshest beer on tap.
